December camp recap

Large number of attendees at camp made for a full school and very busy volunteers.  Glad we were at Roosevelt.

Thanks to everybody that ordered food, cooked, sewed, stuffed envelopes, drove, installed lights, installed doors, unpacked, packed, and cleaned ... and cleaned ... and cleaned.  We couldn't do it without each and every one of you.

Here's a sudden sobering thought - only 3 1/2 weeks until January camp.

Happy Holidays and a safe, fun and happy New Year!!

Even before the horns came down, the crowd was on their feet. Hundreds of cheering fans celebrated an awe - inspiring performance by the Red Team last night in Centerville Ohio. The thunderous applause continued even as the corps left the stadium.

The drumline cut like never before. The colorguard's emotional performance captivated the audience. The first release of the hornline after the opening impact seemed to suck all the air out of the stadium. A majority of the corps hats shot into the air with such excitement and intent, this only confirmed to the members and the staff, last night's performance was the best show to date.  Going into a 2 day rehearsal stretch, the achievement level they accomplished is exactly what the corps needed. The drive is there; they have tasted the excellence of a new realm of performance.

"There is nothing more dangerous than a determined group of people with nothing to loose" - Jason Schubert

After a fun-filled and emotional final bus-ride, the corps arrived safely to our home - away from home, Ball State University in Munci, Indiana.

As members of the “Red Team” from Dubuque, Iowa reflect on their summer season to this point, they don’t just see drill formations improving or hear notes sounding more in tune. The corps members have also found a lot of growth and achievement in the way they interact with one another.

“We’ve definitely been getting a lot stronger physically and mentally, but we’ve also gotten a lot closer,“ said Colts drum major Jason Schubert. “It’s always great to see all the friendships that form through this activity and to watch this group come together as a family is really special to me.” -Drum Corps International

For the first time since 2007, the Colts performed under the lights of J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown Pennsylvania. For many, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. The performance was well received by the audience, earning a standing ovation from the crowd as the corps left the field. One volunteer who was in the stands mentioned that "the old school drum corps guys sitting around me loved the show and gave it a thumbs up". Even after rain delays, the corps was able to produce a solid and memorable performance.

Day 71 - Allentown Regional

Regional Competition: Allentown, PA

Today's Housing: Penn State Schuylkill / 200 University Drive / Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972
Show: J. Birney Crum Stadium, Linden St. & 20th St. ,Allentown, PA 18105
Tomorrows Housing: Harrison Middle School, 129 Windvale Dr. , Pittsburgh PA, 15236

Hailed as the longest running drum corps show still in existence, the Allentown Regional comes from an extremely drum corps-rich environment. To adequately accomidate all corps, the regional is divided into two shows; neither of which is better or worse than the other. Most corps get to choose which day works best with their schedule. Tucked away in the heart of Allentown, the show is held at J. Birney Crum Stadium; a massive, steep, concrete partial wrap-around stadium. The stadium is in a large park, filled with trees, flowers, ducks (don't feed them), walking bridges, and a huge pond/stream that cuts right through the middle. If the location isn't memorable, than the crowd sure will be. Many people refer to them as "Cadets Only" crowd; selectively giving out applause to corps that only really impress them. Maybe this is because they are such seasoned drum corps veterans. Applause are not given with this crowd; they are earned. If the Colts perform the way they did last night, they can get this crowd on their feet.

As usual, last night's crowd in Salem, Virginia (otherwise known as the home of the Dog Show-Show) really gave it up for the Colts. Even tucked away in the Appalachian Mountains, the crowd was a complete sell out. The performers brought both young and old to their feet, filled with applause and cheering that could be heard for miles. In celebration for the many birthdays yesterday, the entire corps enjoyed these beautiful cakes that were donated by Mrs. Bailey, mother of Mackenzie Bailey! And yes, they tasted as good as they looked!

Checking off another long drive from the season's to-do list, the corps arrived safely in Roanoke VA this morning. Quietly tucked away in the Appalachian Mountains, Roanoke and Salem are two very beautiful towns. For some members of the corps, this could be their first time seeing the east coast mountain range. Tomorrow's show, known to most members as the Dog Show Show, will take place at Salem Stadium, 1001 Roanoke Blvd.Salem, VA 24153. It has earned the title as many's favorite show of the year, due to the hundreds of dogs and their owners that occupy the property between the corps warm up sites and the stadium. This is due to an annual dog show that coincides with the drum corps show. The Salem audience has always been particularly receptive to the Colts; the corps is working hard today to ensure that streak continues.
