As usual, last night's crowd in Salem, Virginia (otherwise known as the home of the Dog Show-Show) really gave it up for the Colts. Even tucked away in the Appalachian Mountains, the crowd was a complete sell out. The performers brought both young and old to their feet, filled with applause and cheering that could be heard for miles. In celebration for the many birthdays yesterday, the entire corps enjoyed these beautiful cakes that were donated by Mrs. Bailey, mother of Mackenzie Bailey! And yes, they tasted as good as they looked!

Checking off another long drive from the season's to-do list, the corps arrived safely in Roanoke VA this morning. Quietly tucked away in the Appalachian Mountains, Roanoke and Salem are two very beautiful towns. For some members of the corps, this could be their first time seeing the east coast mountain range. Tomorrow's show, known to most members as the Dog Show Show, will take place at Salem Stadium, 1001 Roanoke Blvd.Salem, VA 24153. It has earned the title as many's favorite show of the year, due to the hundreds of dogs and their owners that occupy the property between the corps warm up sites and the stadium. This is due to an annual dog show that coincides with the drum corps show. The Salem audience has always been particularly receptive to the Colts; the corps is working hard today to ensure that streak continues.

Tomorrow Housing: Wayne County High School, 1325 Azalea Drive, Waynesboro, MS

After a fun filled free-day and a midnight stop at Wal-Mart, the corps is charging into a new week filled with plenty of big shows. Many regard the coming week as one of the most difficult of the entire season. With hot and humid temperatures, big shows, bigger crowds, and the anticipation for performing in one of the largest stadiums of the season on Saturday, the "Deep South" tour has a reputation for making or breaking drum corps. Just like the temperatures, the competition is also heating up. The Colts will see a lot of their rival corps such as Spirit, Troopers, and Blue Stars this week.
Today, the corps will perform at the University of Louisiana - Lafayette at the Ragin' Cajun field. Three more shows will follow, leading them to the Georgia Dome for the Southeastern Championship in Atlanta on Saturday.

With as much hard work the corps has been putting into the program over the last few weeks, some rest and relaxation (or in their case, fried foods and soft drinks) is well deserved. The corps will be taken to downtown San Antonio, an annual free day hotspot for most of the drum corps activity. Members have hundreds of shops and restaurants at their disposal. The historic Riverwalk provides plenty of access to movie theaters and local attractions. For many students, this will also provide their first chance to see and tour the Texas Landmark known as the Alamo. Following the freeday, the corps will rocket into Louisiana.

"You have the chance to make history".. one of the many quotes from the staff after last night's ensemble rehearsal. Rehearsing in Natalia is always memorable - maybe it's the cool breeze that always accompanies the scorching days once the sun goes down. Maybe it's the soft, short cut Texas grass which is so comfortable to march on. Or maybe it's practicing under the lights...this being one of the few chances that corps has to rehearse at night. Ask any Colts member from the last few years; the evening block before the San Antonio regional is always memorable. The 2014 Colts is no different.

Today is the first time in the 2014 in which we see every corps in our class in competition. It will be an exciting evening, as the corps has yet to see all of the corps in our scoring bracket. The Colts are scheduled to perform at 5:54 PM.

Day 57

Rehearsal Day: Natalia, TX

Following yesterday's rainy performance, the show coordinators were forced to cancel the evening's Drumline Battle between the Colts and the Crossmen. Their decision was justified when storm clouds rolled in; lighting sprawled out across the sky, only to be soon followed by torrential downpours. Aside from some a large traffic jam, the corps had a smooth drive out of Austin towards San Antonio. It wasn't long after the corps arrived in our second home of Natalia, TX, that the storm clouds opened up once again. For many, this was some of the heaviest rain they had ever seen. Within minutes, much of the ground was covered in inches of water. This has made for a wet and muggy morning here in Texas. However, miraculously, the fields are in great condition and the members are hard at work preparing for what could potentially be one of the most crucial and exciting performances of the summer; the San Antonio Regional.

Following the longest drive of the season, as well as a little Texas shower (there is nothing little about anything in Texas), the corps had a very productive day preparing for tonight's show in Round Rock, Texas. Day 53

Competition: Lebanon, Illinois

After our last performance in Iowa, the corps has officially turned south. In less than 6 days, the corps will be in Texas; potentially the farthest that many members have ever been away from home. According to DCI.org, the competition is only heating up....

"Iowa Offensive: Colts passed up Spirit of Atlanta on July 12 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, besting the Georgia corps by a slim margin of five hundredths of a point. Colts widened that lead by nearly a point the following day in Muscatine, Iowa. Before Saturday, it hadn’t been since the 2010 DCI World Championships that the Colts had finished ahead of Spirit. "
