Marc Sylvester Leads 2013 Colts Design Team
October 17, 2012From: Jeff MacFarlane, Executive Director

The Colts are pleased to announce the appointment of Marc Sylvester as Program Coordinator and Visual Designer. Marc is a member of the DCI Hall of Fame and brings a lifetime of design and coordination experience having worked with The Cadets for many of his 30+ years. He is an innovator within the activity and helped create some of the most imaginative programs in DCI history. Marc joins returning Colts design team members Chris Tomsa (Brass Arranger), David Nelson (Percussion Arranger) and Brandon Smith (Guard Caption Head).

Marc has been teaching and designing visual programs for over 30 years. He began his career under the tutelage of George Zingali at the 27th Lancers. Together they moved to the Garfield Cadets in 1982 where they changed the visual landscape of the drum corps field. Prior to their arrival, the Cadets finished in the bottom half, or just outside, of DCI Finals for a decade. With George and Marc leading their visual program, the Cadets won three DCI World Championships in Marc' s first four years with the corps. He joined the Star of Indiana staff for their first two seasons in 1986-87. Marc also worked with the Sky Ryders in 1987 on their popular "West Side Story " production, as well as Suncoast Sound in 1988.
For the past four seasons, Marc has been serving in a similar programming capacity with the Blue Knights. He is also an adjudicator, marching band consultant, and drill designer. His experience includes working with some of the world 's finest winter color guards including the Emerald Marquis and Erte, as well as Center Grove HS, Lassiter HS and Braddock HS.

"Marc's experience and success at the highest levels of the marching arts will be tremendous for our program, and most importantly our members," said Vicki MacFarlane, Colts Director. "We are excited to have him contribute to all aspects of our organization. "

Chris Tomsa begins his ninth season with the Colts as Brass Arranger. He has written some memorable arrangements and compositions throughout that time, and is especially known for some of the best ballads of the past decade. David Nelson begins his third year with the Colts and his second as Percussion Caption Head and Arranger. Brandon Smith returns for his second year leading the Colts color guard.
"Coming to the Colts on their 50th anniversary season will be a special time for this year 's members as well as all those prior," said Sylvester. "I have always followed what was happening out in Iowa, and it will be great to collaborate with their accomplished arrangers and designers. I am also excited to be working hands on with all the returning members of the Colts. This will be an amazing journey! "

The Colts first audition weekend is November 23-25, 2012. Interested students should click the JOIN button on the right side of the COLTS webpage and follow the steps listed. Check back here later in the week for sectional staff announcements along with the audition materials you will need prepared for camp.

MARC SYLVESTER (from his 2001 Hall of Fame induction on the DCI website)
" Those who were fortunate enough to benefit under the tutelage of Marc Sylvester remember his love of performing and the challenges he gave the performers in fast moving, innovative drill. Those who have been fortunate to see Marc Sylvester 's shows remember the amazing speed and complexity of design he created on a football field. Beginning his teaching career with the 27th Lancers, Marc started by helping George Zingali put the dots on the paper. Over the years Marc began to develop techniques and mechanics of making the 'wild' ideas of Zingali a reality. Together they moved to The Cadets and continued their collaboration on outstanding drill. Designing and collaborating with Zingali, Marc learned the value of pushing the design concept to the edge and having faith in the performers to accomplish his vision. Marc continues to influence visual design as a consultant of many drum corps, color guards, and high schools. And his passion for the activity has not diminished. You may still find him writing drill, cleaning forms, painting props, or designing flags. He understands the value of entertainment, and clearly understands how important it is to ensure the performers are recognized for their efforts."

As the convoy makes its last journey home, it's with a heavy heart filled with much pride as we see the 2012 season end. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank  you to ALL who gave their time, donated items thru out the season, and were there for support near and far. We simply couldn't do it without you- and for that, we can never say thanks enough.

To our volunteers, be it cooks, support or our dynamic seamstresses who gave endless hours- thank you.

Our Staff- thank you for taking care of our corps. You have helped mold 150 minds into life success. BRAVO!

The drivers- thank you for getting our corps down the road safely! Your dedication to the RED TEAM is above and beyond! We are so thankful for you!

To you, the parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, friends and family. Drum corps is impossible to describe to those who do not know, but your support for your child and the encouragement to follow their dreams is filled  memories that will last a lifetime- for all of you. THANK YOU for being a part of it, and being part of our family. For some of you, thank you for stepping into the unknown crazy world of drum corps! We look forward  to our future together!

A huge thank you to all for the kind words about our virtual cooktruck. As the truck is the home away from home for the corps, we too found ourselves sitting at the same kitchen table with fun updates, pictures and what was going on with their daily lives. We had record hits on the site this year...thanks for being with us at "home" :)

Be sure to save the date of the saturday right after Thanksgiving for our annual banquet held in Dubuque. We hope to see you all there! More info will be out on that later. We will continue to post links to photo albums to the truck as they come in. Stay tuned to the truck as well as our facebook page for any fun things!

To draw to a close- a thank you to all will never be enough. To you COLTS- thank you for your inspiration and dedication. Thank you for being part of a legacy, you will forever more be part of. Some of you leave us as alums, and we wish you much success in your future. Some of you leave us ready to save the date for the November camps- yes really...it is that close! But, until we see you again, the life lessons you take with you, the strong bond of friendships, and your excellence in the musical world- NO ONE will ever take that away from you.  Put it into your daily life. We look forward to see what you'll be doing with it! May excellence always be your minimum standard, today, tomorrow and always. Wear your triangles with pride- you earned it! When you find yourself missing your corps- remember they are right around your neck, just as that same support was with you all summer. We all couldn't be any prouder of every one of you!

Until we meet again-

....Hold On To Morning.....

Finals week scheduleColts Finals Week Update
Welcome to Indianapolis and the DCI Championships week!
What a summer! In some ways it seems we ve been at it for a lifetime and in other ways it s hard to believe we re at the end already.
It has been an incredible adventure, and we thank the parents, supporters, show sponsors, volunteers, alumni, community leaders and all those who had a hand in helping the 2012 Colts become what it has become.
It will go down in history as a memorable, exciting and successful season, full of challenges, hardship, frustration, breakthroughs, successes, standing ovations, life time friends and life long lessons and personal achievement that will follow each of us for life.
Thank you!
There are lots of logistics and lots of opportunities for you to share with us this week.
Parents and friends. If there is any possible way for you to be with us this week at Ball State and at Lucas Oil and downtown Indianapolis, do it. This is going to be a very powerful and meaningful week for us all. We will be creating memories and experiences that will last a lifetime and if you are able to be here with us it will create an understanding you cannot possibly share without being here.
And you need to see in person what these amazing kids have accomplished this summer. A DVD will never do it justice. You will be so very proud of what we have done together this summer. Don' t miss the opportunity to experience it with your son or daughter.
As we said in the opening meetings with parents last winter. Hearing about the standing ovation or being a part of it is all the difference in the world . Be here if there is any possible way.
While we' ve had some frustrations with the competition aspects of our season, it s now all about the final performances and making history and a legacy. We re going to be great this week!

HOUSING FOR INDIANAPOLIS FINALS WEEK
The Colts and the Colt Cadets will be sharing housing at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. We' ll be staying in the field house, and rehearsing at the other end of the campus, at and near the Ball State football stadium.

MONDAY AND TUESDAY
We re in Wapakoneta Ohio at their middle school today (Monday) and Tuesday. It s about 75 miles north of Dayton Ohio if you' re keeping score. We stayed here last year as well and it s a wonderful place for us. Access to a stadium with lights, facilities galore and a very supportive community has been great.
We ll be putting on a show for the community on Tuesday night at 9 p.m. as a thank you and doing late night rehearsals in the stadium both nights.
We will depart for Ball State at midnight on Tuesday night.

The Colts will be arriving at Ball State at about 3 a.m. on Wednesday morning
(Tuesday night) and the Cadets will arrive around 4 a.m. from their finals appearance in Michigan City in the Open Class Finals competition.

WEDNESDAY
This is our one full rehearsal day at Ball State and it will include an evening rehearsal near the Ball State University football stadium.
All our rehearsals will be across the street from the stadium, about 2 miles from our sleeping and cooking facility.
We' ll bus to and from rehearsal, and we ll leave the equipment truck at the field overnight for access during rehearsals.
Rehearsal will end at around 9 p.m. Wednesday night.

THURSDAY
Prelims at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Both the Colts and Cadets will be performing today. The Cadets will go on about 11 a.m., to be determined tonight in Michigan City. The Colts are on at 5:01 p.m., seeded 17th following the averaging of scores from San Antonio, Atlanta and Allentown.
The show starts at 10:30 a.m.
We'll be doing our warm ups two hours prior to our show time, with the color guard and the pit warming up outside the stadium and brass and battery percussion warming up at Military Park and busing to the stadium just before we step off.
Join us for warm ups, and allow yourself about 10 minutes to walk to the stadium.

Our Thursday run through will be at 10:45 a.m.

Photos will be taken following our performance in the exit lot. Following the performance we will return to Ball State for the evening for dinner.

We will do our triangle ceremony after we return to Ball State Thursday evening, beginning with a full corps meeting at 9:45.

It is really meaningful - first year members have earned their triangles and returning members add another to the legacy around their necks.
Parents, you ll see this triangle off and on for years to come and it s likely to be one of the most prized possessions from here on. Be there to share it with them!

FRIDAY
Semi Finals at Lucas Oil Stadium
The top 25 scoring corps from Thursday will compete on Friday. The Colts step off time will be determined on Thursday but will likely be between 3:30 and 5:00.
Parents, if there is any way for you to be with us at Ball State for the final run through of the season on Friday morning, please join us. If we make finals, of course, that will be on Saturday.
The Friday run through will be earlier than Thursday, but no earlier than 9:45 a.m.
Parents, join us outside the stadium following the performance to share this time with your kid. Come into the area on the backside of the stadium that on Thursday was set up for Jolesch Photography, and use the gate nearest the stadium into that area. DCI and stadium personnel will let you into the area and are expecting you.
Hurry from your seats to the area so you can share the moment - it s a long walk around to the back of the stadium!
Following our semi finals performance, we will stay to attend the rest of the show and depart for Ball State at 11:15.

SATURDAY
Breakfast will be a brisk 6:45. We will be departing Ball State at 8:30 a.m. for downtown Indianapolis and will not be returning.
All non-finalist corps participate in the Celebrate the Arts Parade in downtown Indianapolis. It starts at 11 a.m. and concludes with a massed corps performance following the parade at 1 p.m. on the steps of the War Memorial, Meridian and Michigan Streets, about a block from the end of the parade route.
The parade runs from Pennsylvania and Walnut to Meridian and Walnut, following a U shape.
We will hold our final meeting of the year at American Legion Mall, on the corner of Meridian and St. Clair, near the end of the parade.
Buses will be parked there for those who wish to get luggage off them there and the trucks will be there as well. We ll check in equipment and hold our final meeting in the park. We ll be done by 5:15, at which point we are dismissed.
Our final meeting includes some good conversations and age out speeches, plus a final playing of Morning and is an experience you will want with us if you can. All parents, friends and family are invited to this very moving and powerful experience.
TRAVEL HOME
Members may leave with parents following the closing meeting in the park. At that point, all members are free to go where they are going to go.
We will be taking a bus from the stadium parking to the Indianapolis Airport at 11:30 p.m. and dropping flyers there for their overnight experience. There will be hundreds of corps members there from across the entire activity to spend the evening with.
We will be departing from the stadium to drive to Dubuque. Stops along the way are being determined now and will be announced on Saturday in time to make pick up arrangements but they will be along I-74.
Luggage and people pick up options:
Ball State University: Luggage only may be picked up and loaded at Ball State Saturday morning, but members will ride with the corps to the parade.
At the American Legion Mall in the afternoon: The buses will be there from 10:30 a.m. till we drive to the stadium at about 5:30. Buses will be parked near the American Legion Mall for the duration of our stay downtown.
Members may leave on their own after our final dismissal from the park, or they may stay with us to the stadium.
At the stadium: Bus parking will be near the stadium, and we will be there from 6:00 until midnight.
One bus will be designed as the airport bus, and all luggage will be on that bus when we load Saturday morning. We will leave the stadium to drive to the airport at 11:30 p.m. from the bus parking lot and we will then meet up with our other vehicles at a truck stop and drive together overnight to Dubuque.
En route to Dubuque: We will have stops along I-74 on the way home, and locations and times will be finalized on Saturday.
All the way to Dubuque: Certain bus bays will be designated as Dubuque only and will not open from Saturday morning until we reach the Colts Center. We should be arriving in Dubuque mid morning on Sunday, around 9 a.m.
All members will have wristbands, which allow admission to Saturday finals.
Wristbands for adults are available for volunteers only, but we don t have extras. Parents attending the shows and not on the volunteer list will need to purchase tickets for the shows.

TICKETS
The Colts blocks of tickets for all shows are sold out, but there are still great seats available for all shows at www.dci.org. Or, at the box office at the stadium.
Thank you for all your support in making this amazing experience possible!
