Important picture info

I know. I know. I should have had galleries up by now of my pictures. Well, there's this job thing that kind of slides all summer while I run away with the circus....I'll get to it. I promise.

Meanwhile, it's VERY IMPORTANT that you send pictures to Nic Champagne for the banquet video. And that you do it soon. His email is Nicholas-champagne@uiowa.edu. Send digital photos in whatever format you have. He said send anything you've got and he'll pick. And if you have video, email him and tell him that too.

That email again is

Nicholas-champagne@uiowa.edu

Do it now. And tell your friends and anyone who might not see it here.

thanks.

Des Moines Register article on Colt

Click on the post title to read a Des Moines Register article about Nick Botkin and his summer with the Colts.

(Thanks to Jody Glow for sending the link along)

Fan mail

As some of you may remember from earlier this summer, a "rookie cook" from a Div. III corps had found the Colts Virtual Cooktruck and was reading up on the care and feeding of a drum corps. Greg looked her up at the homeshow in Dubuque to say hi, and she sent him the following fan mail. Seems like our cooks' hard work is benefitting not only our kids, but kids across the activity.

An excerpt from her email to Greg:

"Thanks so much for taking the time to track me down and talk with me at your show in Iowa. That gesture really made me feel special.

It turned out that I didn't too bad for a rookie cook… many staff and long-time members of Impulse praised my efforts, and said that they have never eaten so well while on tour. I'm thankful to have been allowed access to your virtual cook truck, Greg. It really alleviated a lot of my stress and gave me some great insight towards menu planning. Thanks again, that's a great thing you've got going!"

Thanks, Sheri. Come by the real Colts cooktruck next summer and say hi!

Today is Sunday, Aug. 13; it's over

There's no schedule.

There's no menu.

There's no cooks.

There's no news.

But there will always be the 2006 Colts.

Images: Sam Hazo pounding the rack in Natalia. Breakfast in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Mississippi. Cornfield in Delhi. The crowd at homeshow. Donuts in Saydel. Kansas. And the best damn semifinals performance ever. Ever. And of course Freebird!

Thank you, 2006 Colts. Thanks for the 'Ride.' I love you all.

Dear Colts family

Watching from the sideline being able to be with you at anytime you like is an incredible luxurious way to stay connected through the electronic freeway called the internet.
On that freeway there is one great truck rollin' on througout the year

"Colts virtual Cooktruck"

Thanks to the drivers/head cooks Rod, Bill and David "thats my boys" Speer.
I am already saving for next years ticket to hop on as a virtual Colts cook and hopefully in real time during the season.

Saving the argument for DCP I can only underline David that this years Colts brought something special which deserved more.

On DCI seasonpass I could finally see the complete show for the first time.
(can you imagine the aggony having to wait a whole season!?!)
From 11.30 - 06.00 A.M. Real time in Camp Randell with you guys,
wanting to chear and shout throughout the show, but having to stay quiet not to wake up the whole neighbourhood. The stress when my PC blocks during Crossmen' show, reboot to be just in time for the show I've been waiting for ..... not good for my health.
Goosebumps pulling my hairs straight up all over is the closest description I can give of what I experianced those15 minutes seeing my Colts performing their show of a lifetime.
One of the two times I cried my eyes out that night.
(that moment and the performance of the Scouts Alumni sentimental show which took me way back to the days I marched in the eighties)
It must have been special to witness it life in the stadium, now I have to wait again until the DVD is ready to get a small idea of how it must have been.

Colts family
Greg, Vicky, Jeff, Jake, staff, members, parents, volunteers, drivers, Frank Bob and grandma,
head cooks (Jody G especialy for running a cooktruck with only 2 people in the heat of the season), cooks,
I want to finish the season with a big

THANK YOU ALL!!!

Today's News
Ask me sometime about why there are no field shots from the age-out ceremony in Madison. Better yet, ask Greg Orwoll. He tells the story better.

Donations of grapes from Val A. and foot powder from Milton High.

If there are typos today, blame me. I'm still bleery this morning.

Olaf called from Holland yesterday as we were getting ready to leave for the stadium. He so wanted to be with us. Thanks, big guy. It was great to talk to you. Keep lovin' our Colts.

Lots and lots of people showed up for some very moving age-out speeches yesterday afternoon. I was afraid for a while that the Colts had once again left their best performance of the year on the practice field with their run-through yesterday afternoon. But they topped it in Camp Randall last night. Sorry, but the DCI judges JUST DON'T GET IT. They missed this one. It will be talked about for years as the best performance that didn't make finals.

I'll have a lot of thank you messages to post over the next few days. The most thanks have to go out to the people who agreed to be head cooks this year -- from cornfield to finals we had the best food in drum corps. Y'all realize that many, many of the head cooks don't have sons or daughters currently marching in the corps, don't you? We even had one head cook whose daughter was marching in another corps this year. Think about that. We will need some of you current Colts parents to step up and get on the cook list next year, including some new head cooks. Start thinking about it now.

But I really wanted to do was take a little time to personally thank the people that help me keep this thing running all summer. My "staff" at the Virtual Cooktruck -- Rod, Bill, my own darling Jody, Jody G., Olaf, and lots of others. (It occurs to me that Jim J. needs to be added to the staff listing at the right. He does his share here too.) All the people who called me in reports -- I know I'll leave someone out if I try to list them from memory -- thanks for talking to my voicemail when I was tied up at work. Thanks for remembering who to call where on which day. Thanks for all the great picture submissions this year. There are a lot more to come. Thanks for all of you who left comments and the 102,607 people who had visited the site through Friday. I think we might have to get together and do this again next year.

Happy Birthday Dan the Brit!
Happy Birthday Luba

Well, the quarterfinals didn't quite go the way most of us had hoped. A few problems here and there but also some incredible performances. We'll get 'em tonight. Wait and see.

Kids were upbeat in the breakfast line this morning after cals. Sectionals, then runthrough, then age-out speeches. Some tears I'm sure -- me included.

Sure signs of the end of tour: signup sheets for who's going where after finals. Rides to airports. Rides to Dubuque. Rides home.

Lots of food being prepared today. Lots and lots of baking. Sandwich assembly lines set up in the parking lot. Nothing mellow and "end of tour-like" for the cooks today. But lots of laughs.

Posted at the cooktruck: Mellos please see Hannah ASAP. Thanks.

Ongelofelijk (Dutch for unbelievable)

It is 1.30 AM in the morning in Holland, but I had to sit this one out before I go to sleep.
I have to be with my family, although it is only a long distance connection.

Intensity jumping of my screen watching you guys perform, despite I only received 1 picture per 15 seconds on DCI webcam. The quality of the videostream ain't the same as previous, but I could hear and see you guys doing a performance of a lifetime. And you still have another shot in semies to put even the last bits out of your toes on the field.
I can't tell how I feel having to sit out this year, not being able to help out in the kitchen and working for such a great Colts team. It must be a memorable season and still more memories to create.
Guard, you look fabulous.
What a teamwork putting such a glamour and appearance all over the field. Even on a webcam it jumps into the eye.

What an incredible job you all did this season, I am really proud of my family!!

For semi finals I can only say:
"Enjoy yourself as much as you can out there" "It will be an one and only lifetime experience"
and you'll take that with you during your life, it is all yours"

Put everything you've got into it, go for it,
you've nothing to loose
go and kick some ...

Katrina's family brought apples and peaches

Today's update is brought to you through the courtesy of the Milton Public Library. Stop in and say thanks if you're nearby. The nice librarian fixed us up with internet access.

Overcast day in Milton today. Which keeps it a little cooler, but a bit muggy. Kids were in great spirits at breakfast this morning. Maybe a little sleepy, but bright and smiling when they said good morning to cooks. The show is looking "cleaner than it's ever been," according to one Colt. "We'll see what happens," he said.

Good news for corps volunteers!

So many friends (and strangers) have told me that I’m crazy for spending my vacation cooking that I almost started to believe it myself. As it turns out, it’s good for us! According to The Wall Street Journal columnist Jared Sandberg, people who spend their vacation “relaxing” end up dumber and less fulfilled! Hear the NPR interview here.

Hello fellow (former) Colts!

For those of you that will be in Madison for DCI Champs this weekend, let's plan on having a little get-together at the Stadium Sports Bar from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday (day of Finals). It will probably be busy with drum corps people, but it is close to the stadium.

The address is 1419 Monroe St, Madison, WI 53711. Google map of the Stadium Bar location

If anyone gets there early, try to save some seats/tables, if possible.
Hope to see you there!

Happy 21st Birthday Clinton H!

Mail tonight!

Jody Glow called back to say a great big THANK YOU to Tom H for pitching in to help in the kitchen. Dianne had to go home for a couple of days, so Tom is there on the cooktruck as well as driving a bus up to Milton. Thanks Tom!

If you want to bring a donation of fruit, the cooks are requesting grapes or kiwi or something like that. "We are bananaed out," Shari says.

Yesterday, the cooks had help from everybody. Thanks to everyone who pitched in and helped get the corps fed and to Milton. I don't think the corps members even noticed the cook crew was that short.

Sue is in Milton sewing. (I don't know if Lauren is still there or not. I'm sure she's around somewhere.) Yay for all the the sewing crew!

Aaron S's family brought brownie bits and bananas. Dave A's family brought ice cream treats. Thanks to everyone who brought donations. Even if we miss getting your name, your donation to our kids is greatly appreciated.

Shari said it was "nice and cool" in Milton last night and that this morning started off cool. The sun was out when I was talking to her.

Today's News
There's an abbreviated report this morning because Jody G. and Shari are the only 'real' cooks left on tour right now. Sorry guys. There have been great guest cooks in like Dave P. and the ones mentioned in yesterday's post. Thanks to everyone who pitched in and helped over the rough time. Drivers Suzie and Tom H. are helping out in the kitchen when they can too. But Jody and Shari were up until 1:45 a.m. and back up at 6 to cook breakfast.

The Naperville families came through with donations again. The same families as before brought freshly baked pies. B.R.'s grandparents brought Gatorade. Scooter's parents brought fruit salad and Gatorade. Casey's family brought fruit and watermelon. And non-Napervillians contributed too. Penny brought kiwi, pineapple, and peaches that were much appreciated.

More later if I get the chance -- David.

I was not home this morning when Jody called and left me today's information - I assume the corps is doing more today than just eating, and somewhere in there are things like cals, visual, ensemble, sectionals, and run-through. Be creative and add them in where you think they may go; by now, we all know the system :)

Rich and Erin Petty donated gatorade, apples, bananas, and gatorade popcicles. Rich is also a guest cook for lunch today.

John and Suzie drive. Lauren and Sue are back sewing - yeah!

At my (Rod) house in Naperville, it's raining lightly as of 12:30. I sure hope it clears up for this evening. We have not had a rain-out yet as far as I know, and I most certainly don't want it to be tonight.

Article submitted to Naperville Sun Newspaper

Karen R. (BR's Mom) copied me on an article she emailed to our local newspaper, the Naperville Sun. We don't know if they will print it or not, so I wanted to be sure all you cooktruck readers had a chance to see it. Karen did a great job answering the "what is drum corps" question, plus highlighted the large number of drum corps members we have from our town and high school.

Here's the article:

Dear Naperville Sun Reporters:

Being news reporters, I am sure you are all aware of the big event coming to North Central College on Sunday – Drum Corps International (“DCI”). I am writing to give you a bit of DCI history and Naperville DCI trivia that you may not know. Even if you do not intend to cover the DCI event on Sunday, I hope you will take a moment to read the following.

I am including Mr. Nolan, sports editor of the Naperville Sun, in this e-mail because for those of us who are familiar with drum corps, we consider it to be as much a sport as it is entertainment. The 2005 DCI World Championships held at Gillette Stadium outside Boston even got coverage by ESPN last year. This year’s World Championships will be held at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin from August 10-12th. Local movie theatres are showing live coverage of the championships. The top 12 corps will perform on Saturday night, August 12th.

The Naperville Sun has done cover stories in the past about drum corps and I hope you cover it again this year. It is very, very big business involving thousands of participants and fans throughout the world, and fills high school and college stadiums across the country all summer long. We in Naperville are very fortunate to have the opportunity to host a DCI show. I believe they expect a sell-out crowd again this year.

Naperville Central High School has 13 current and former students marching in four different Division I drum corps this summer (see a short bio of each, below). This is a remarkable number of students from one high school. We have six marching with the Colts (based in Dubuque, Iowa), three marching with the Madison Scouts (based in Madison, Wisconsin), three marching with the Blue Stars (based in LaCrosse, Wisconsin), and one marching with the Cavaliers (based in Rosemont, Illinois). They will all compete together in Madison next weekend.

The Executive Director of DCI, Dan Atcheson, lives in Naperville. His daughter, Jenny, a 2004 Waubonsie Valley graduate, is a Colts color guard member. Jenny also works with the Naperville Central color guard during the fall marching band season.

Each Division I drum corps consists of up to 135 members, including brass (trumpet, mellophone, baritone and tubas), percussion (snare drums, bass drums, tenor drums, cymbal lines and “front ensemble”—vibraphones, timpanis, chimes, xylophones, etc.), and color guard (flags, rifles, sabers and dance). Members range in age from 15 to 21. Thousands audition each December and January for the coveted member positions, coming from as far away as Taiwan, Japan, Europe and Canada. They are among the very best marching band students from their high schools and colleges.

These are not halftime marching bands – these corps practice 12 hours a day for 70 days each summer, competing in high school and college stadiums all over the United States. The corps perform at a professional level and are truly amazing to see. The corps travel by bus, sleep on gym floors (or on the bus), shower in locker rooms, eat their meals sitting on pavement (or, if they’re lucky, under a nice shade tree). They practice in rain and sweltering heat. They practice with sore muscles, sprains, sunburn, mosquito bites and bee stings, and they love every minute of it! These are not typical young adults – they are amazing musicians who have the athletic ability to march very difficult (and ever-changing) drill. They learn dedication, responsibility, teamwork, leadership and the value of hard work. They are to be admired.

Each drum corps relies heavily on volunteerism to help keep their operating costs down. Cooks are not hired – they are parents who take a week or two of their vacation each summer to travel with the corps, preparing five meals a day from a cook truck parked in school parking lots. Parents also volunteer to help alter uniforms, repair equipment, drive equipment vans and sell souvenirs. For the parents, this is an unbelievably rewarding experience. To hear young adults say, “thank you parents, you are awesome!” is something every parent dreams of hearing. And for drum corps parent volunteers, they hear it every day.

In addition to the “tour” parents, other parents, friends and community members throughout the country show up with “treasures” such as fresh fruit, cookies, Gatorade, ice and bottled water, which is always welcome. For example, several local Colts parents are providing pies to the Colts on Sunday as a way of saying thank you and good luck to the corps as they begin the final week of competition for the 2006 year.

After snack last night, it poured rain, which was a good thing. Lights out was early last night, and it cooled things off a little bit. It's warm today, but certainly more tolerable. Nice and clear today with blue skies.

After the show tonight, the corps has a 14-hour drive ahead of them, on the way to Goshen, IN. The cooks are preparing "bus bags" so the kids can have some fresh fruit and drink for a snack in the morning. Cereal will be ready for them upon arrival, and the cooks are preparing as much of the lunch in advance, so it can quickly follow - 'should be interesting.

Thanks to David & Kathleen Kalek for the donation of bananas and grapes.

Thanks to Susan & Ian Palmer, and Chuck & Carol Collins for the donation of blueberries and bananas.

The next (and final?) food drop is now scheduled for Tuesday, and the freezer is reportedly looking pretty sparce. I guess you can pretty much see what and where everything is, which is way different from the last time I (Rod) was in the friendly confines.

Greg had to go in and get something yesterday, and it took several tools to pry the frozen container from its home; things on the bottom and in the back get pretty stuck on staying there. You freezer jockeys know what I am talking about!

Today, it's hot. Yesterday in DC, it was hot. Basically, it's HOT.

A good time was had in DC yesterday, but did I say it was hot? Jack said the city had to substantially reduce the number of Metro trains (subway) running to conserve power, so getting around was a little more challenging.

The corps arrived in PA about 3 AM. The staff set an earlier than normal lights out time tonight to give the kids extra rest due to the high temperatures.

Minor additions and adjustments continue to be made to the show.

Jack says, "It's nice and hot here."

The corps got a donation of cookies from Callie and Marsha Meiners for Matthew C. Thanks for the comment so I could give credit.

The cooks are now asking for donations of Gatorade and fresh fruit. Hey, it worked with the cookies!

I'm not one to dwell on numbers, but check out last night's score over at dci.org. The Colts went up in every caption. It's starting to happen for them, I think.
