Camp today!
Please read the camp reminders over at colts.org. There's a new one today if you already read the one yesterday. And check over there right before you leave for last-minute changes and announcements. Don't check here. We'll be on the road starting about 2 p.m. so we won't have updates after that.
Travel safely. See you starting at 7:30 p.m. for check in.

Alumni chats
Ben over at www.coltsalumni.org has set up an online chat on that super-cool Colts alumni site. He's asked us to help spread the word so they get as many people as possible to join in the fun. He's setting up a regular chat for this (and every) Wednesday at 7 p.m.
(I'm thinking that's central time, so Katie and the other Colts in Japan and Dan the Brit and Becks in the U.K. will have to do the time conversion thing on their own. As will all the rest of you somewhere else in the world.)
Ben's doing a great job in thinking up ways to help bring the Red Team together. Make sure to visit his site and chat. Or just say hello.

2008 volunteer calendar
Bill has put together a very preliminary volunteer calendar for tour 2008. If you click on the link in the right sidebar, you'll download a planner that has nothing on it yet. Yes, it's scary. That's a lot of empty space to fill up in just seven camps.
Volunteers should see Bill at check-in next Friday to start talking about tour for next summer. We had a ton of age-out members this year, and even though volunteers never age out, I'm sure we will have a lot of big shoes to fill next summer on tour. In the corps and in the cooktruck.
A word of warning, though. None of the dates and places on this very preliminary calendar are set in stone, so don't go making summer travel plans based on them yet. We'll let you know when the dates are nailed down. OK, you've been warned. Now, go talk to Bill or e-mail him at colts.cooks@comcast.net.

Position Available
We are now accepting applications for the new position of Managing Editor of the Colts Virtual Cooktruck.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a mastery of the blogosphere and a willingness to work long hours for no pay. Reports to the Editor-in-Chief. (When you can find him.) Many opportunities for advancement.
Expressions of interest should be directed to speer.david@gmail.com.
(Seriously, I AM looking for someone with an interest in taking over some of the day-to-day filing of the virtual cooktruck, especially next summer. I'd like to find someone with a love of the Colts and a love of the internet who would like to find new, easier ways of doing the things we have always done (the maps -- if we could just automate the maps....) and who could bring some fresh ideas of what else we could add to the blog to make it even more useful and fun. As with the real cooktruck, maintenance and upgrading need to be during camp season, since it's no fun to try to make repairs and/or improvements once the corps is out on the road. Write me if you'd like to help.)

Happy New Year!
Hello and welcome to 2008!
We had a great new year's eve party last night at the banquet and after. Great to see lots of old Colts friends and to talk about what a great year 2007 was. We missed those of you who couldn't be there -- but we talked about you. :)
And then today we heard about what 2008 holds in store for the whole Colts family -- the open class Colts Cadets and the world class Colts. It's gonna be a great year to be a Colt.
There'll be pictures in a few days and then we'll see you at camp Dec. 14.

Colts in Japan
Hello! Just a quick update and some pictures from Japan!
This last weekend was Drum Corps Japan finals. I ventured over to Tokyo to see them. Here is a picture of retreat. Yoko (tuba, 2003) is the vis caption head of a corps from Osaka. They did very well this weekend!! DCJ has their I&E competition later, so I will be joining the corps starting next weekend to rehearse. Also, there are two girls from this drum corps who are planning on going to Dubuque in December for auditions.
Also, I have been lucky enough to see Yuka, Junya, and Mayumi a few times. I have also emailed Kana, but both of our schedules have been too busy so far to find time to get together.
Enjoy banquet this month!

OK, so I thought that the mural on the wall in yesterday's photo was distinctive enough to i.d. the place. But not so much. So below is a hint to yesterday's location.
And here's today's new location, as we play "Where Are We Today?"

Where are we today?
You guys are too smart. Yes, where we were in the shadow of the power plant was Michigan City, where we had the rad police escort. Now, where are we today? Maybe this one will be a bit harder.

The answer to yesterday's question: Ft. Osage High School in Missouri.

WHO are we today?
This from our friend Peter Hansen in Kansas. The quiz question will follow the text of his email::
Two photos attached - the first is Bryce, Chris, and Keenan at the Colts info booth at the KU Marching Festival Oct 27 in Lawrence, KS. We didn't sell a lot of t-shirts, but got good visibility with a lot of band members and passed out quite a few info packets. Jackie Paschang and Carol Lowman were also around (and Jackie supposedly has a picture of all five of them) but were off helping run the overall event most of the day. Lisa Paschang was manning the entry gate along with Debbie and Brock Lowman, Steve Paschang was doing whatever needed doing, Greg was on the field judging, John Wickersham was there with the band that he teaches, so with my wife and I and all of them it was quite the Colts get-together. We finished the evening with pizza and refreshments at a local watering hole.
Peter Hansen
Now for the quiz. Take a close look at the musical ensemble below. Especially the uniforms. Recognize them? Here's a hint -- it's not The Colts. Our friends who saw them in Lawrence might have an advantage here. Does anyone have a guess?
Kendall had the weekend question right. That photo was from the pre-show huddle in Menomonie, WI. The sculpture on the roof is really the only clue.

Where are we today - weekend edition
Yes, Friday's photo was taken in Varna, Illinois. Congrats to everyone with the right answer. Today's is a bit harder, I think. Just like the New York Times Crossword puzzle on the weekends. So let's play, Where Are We Today?
I'll have the answer and another puzzle Monday.
Enjoy.

I don't know why, but it takes me about a month to get organized after I get back from finals. I don't know how the kids pick up and go right back to school, but it takes me a few weeks to get my head back around work, home, chores, etc.
Anyway, in the right sidebar is a new link "San Antonio by David S." Enjoy.

YES!!!!! Well, I know we are all just a bit excited. I understand there was quite the celebration last night once everyone got back to the housing site. ‘Wish I was there.
It seems like the first camp was not all that long ago. It’s hard to believe we are here already; the last day of this season. And what a season it was!
GO RED TEAM!!
Happy birthday to Dan “the Britt” and Luba!

Before we get to the news please send an email to greg@colts.org with your well-wishes for the Colts. We’re looking for 100% participation! Thanks!
Well here we are, right in the thick of it. Staff and parents watching last night’s show said it was good, but not the best they’ve seen all year – there’s room to grow tonight!!
The police and custodial support at the housing site has been very good. The cooks have lots of help, with lots of visitors. Boy, do I wish I was there (Rod).
Final run-through of the season is scheduled for Saturday at 11 AM. If there is any way to attend, do it. It’s not to be missed.
Many of us from the Chicago land area watched the Colts perform in the theatre last night, and it was fantastic to see. Not as good as being there of course. The audience at the theatre gave the Colts a good round of applause. And the announcers had good things to say about the corps, especially the closer. They remarked that it was the “closer of the year”. They loved the music selection, drill and everything about it.

Today is “even more beautiful than the day before. It’s fantastic here,” Jim J. says.
It’s quarterfinals day and it’s “very exciting.” The corps had a long day of rehearsal yesterday – worked like they always do. But they are focused and not nervous at all, Jim says, “so they should be great.”
There have been a number of alumni working various jobs on and off the cooktruck.
Fresh fruit has been donated for tomorrow.
Jim says the cooks got to watch rehearsal and runthrough last night in a beautiful setting. “Mountains in the background. The weather was fantastic and the drum corps was even better.”

Another bright, sunny day in Southern California
There was a tour by some DCIs VIPs going on when I talked to Jim on the cooktruck today.
Member day at the souvie truck
Also, lost and found day. Claim it if you want it.
Rehearsal ended abruptly last night when the field lights cut out unexpectedly. But the corps is working hard and has gotten a lot accomplished in the past couple of days.
The sewing crew was adding sparkles to the butterfly flags.
There are about 12 people helping today on the cooktruck, with several visiting alumni being put to work.
The all-corps meeting last night was so that the brass members could perform their I&E material for the rest of the corps. Jim said they were great, with one of them that was really, really cute. The I&E performers left at about 3 p.m. for their competition today.

Today's News
It’s a beautiful, southern California day; not a cloud in the sky.
Although the cooks did not experience it, the kids really enjoyed the beach. It was beautiful and refreshing. One member said “I had the best hamburger of my life”. I guess it’s always about the food.
It turns out Twit may have actually been struck by lightening in Lubbock, TX, hence all the continued electrical problems. It finally gave out yesterday, and is still in San Diego getting repaired. A bus was leased to replace it.
The housing site is literally 2 miles from the Rose Bowl, a prime location. It’s a very large high school campus, with lots of buildings and grounds.
Lots of cleaning and polishing of the show going on today, in preparation for Thursday.

Yesterday’s trip to the show site tested the patience of everyone; it was very challenging due to lots of construction and a total lack of directional signage. But, they made it and all is good; just an inconvenience, remember!
Last night, after the cooks prepared the evening meal, they were given the night off! Staff served the meal and did clean-up (and did an excellent job, I understand). Apparently, they were insistent that green beans be taken, before ice cream was offered.
Today is shaping up to be a nice day; a little hazy/foggy, but pleasant.

Happy Birthday, Brian L.
Unusual show last night – Colts got on the field; started the opener and got to David’s solo … and were called off the field due to a downpour. We waited about 20 minutes, re-took the field and did the show.
Take 2 was filled with lots of energy and was a great show; some problems due to conditions – still raining, wet and windy.
Arrived a little late in San Diego but Jim said, “It’s a gorgeous day in sunny California. Warm, not sweltering, and NO FLIES.”

We get letters
And we share:
Last week I finally got to see the Colts in action for two days' worth of solid rehearsal in Lawrence, Kansas. I've been exposed to drum corps a lot throughout my life, but seeing the Colts is like seeing no one else; these 'kids' are far more dedicated, and far more passionate. What's more, they deserve more than any corps I know to go to finals in Pasadena next week.

It doesn't matter that they're not one of the huge "everybody knows us" corps... in comparison, they have everything those corps don't: spirit, determination, guts, emotion... these kids WANT IT so much more than anyone I've ever seen. To everyone out there who thinks they don't deserve it: you've obviously not been watching, or you don't have a sense of heart.
I'm a Colts fan, and I've never been more proud of it. Take finals.

Happy Birthday, Brett W.
Corps had rain twice at housing site in El Paso but only sprinkles at the show site. “Awesome show last night.”, Jim J. said, “Audience loved it and went crazy.” Dee said, “best show ever”. The members seem to be floating on cloud 9. The Sun Bowl stadium in El Paso is in the side of a mountain. Trophy was a large piñata, tortillas and jalapeños.
Donations of more aloe vera plants; Gatorade from an alum; Gatorade, brownies and cup cakes from local band organization.
Closer flower flags are now sparkly – a great effect!!
