10:30 Ensemble

3:40 Warm-up
5:40 Walk
5:50 Gate
6:08 Perform
11:15 Age-Out Ceremony
12:00 Depart for School
Lots of Colts friends and supporters have arrived in Bloomington and Indianapolis, and it's great to see everyone! Colt Cadets are here too, of course, and performed in semi-finals this morning. Yesterday was a warm, mostly sunny day which was great for rehearsing. There was a nice crowd watching the rehearsal while I was there. Lucas Oil Stadium is huge and high. The weather for the performance was perfect, because they kept the stadium roof closed. Colts had a nice show, and from the nosebleed section the drill looked spot-on (the whole visual program did, actually). While the audience was appreciative of the early corps performing, the Colts were the first corps with a noticeable following.
I understand that the age-outs played "Morning" to wake the corps this morning. That would have been an awesome way to wake up! It's sunny and 73 today; another great day for rehearsing.
GO RED TEAM!

Happy Birthday, Katie G!
For those who don't know, I&E is the individual and ensemble competition at finals each year. Individuals and groups from the Colts practice a piece on their own all season and compete with individuals and groups from all the other corps - Open and World Class. Includes horn players, percussionists, and guard.
It was foggy early and now it's cloudy, but dry. Great!
Food drop put away - with the help of Jim J, who has been dropping in off and on since the corps arrived.
Lots of new faces today on the volunteer crew. A big thanks to Diane H and her crew who took over for the trip from PA to IN!
As always, check colts.org for the latest official word on tour news, housing sites, mail drops, or other corps information.

It's Finals Week
Hi fans!
It's finals week. So posts on the Virtual Cooktruck are going to be erratic this week at best. :) (Although Jim J's done a good job posting from the road today in Bloomington. Yay Jim!)
Everyone's on the road to or from somewhere. Internet connections are few and far between. So there'll be something here as the week goes along but who knows what that might be. The usual diet of schedules, menus, maps, and weather reports changes finals week.
Here's the weather link for Bloomington
Thanks for following along all season. And a special thanks to all the cooks, head cooks, volunteers, drivers, etc. who took time out of their busy day on the road to call me or Bill or Rod or Jim or Jody or whoever and give the daily reports. Our sixth year at this. Who would have believed it?
So good luck to the Colts who are doing I&E tomorrow. And lots of us will be there to cheer the corps on as they compete. Join us.
Go Red Team!

White Board
I remember cleaning this board on day 1 of tour and posting a photo with some comment about it being that clean at the end of tour. Well, we've made it to the last tour stop, and the board looks like it's had a long, rough summer!

Thanks a bunch to Jack W and his wonderful crew(s) for a great week on the east coast. You set them up well for the run back to the Midwest.
Thanks to Diane H for taking over as self-described "first-time, rookie head cook."
Thanks to everyone who has donated fruit and other fresh produce to keep the corps well supplied.
Thanks to the rain in New Jersey for stopping so the new crew didn't have to serve every meal in the rain today. And thanks to the school for having a sheltered area for brass rehearsal and serving when it was raining.
Diane H said "Alex's family" stopped by to help and that Tom H had been on the truck helping too. Thanks, guys. She also said, "It's good. We're doing great."

Today's News
The Colts had a great show last night, despite being picked on by the rain.
Long travel time to the show today, but new cook Ed E brought snacks for the corps to have on the bus.
Nice facility in New Jersey for a short rehearsal schedule today.
I can almost hear and seem them in J. Birney Crum stadium in Allentown tonight -- one of the best spots to see a drum corps show. But it's always a bit sad 'cause you know when you're in Allentown that this year's tour is almost over.

Beautiful blues skies over Pennsylvania today. And cooler.
Olaf joined the cook crew last night after the show. "It's nice to be able to reach things without getting a ladder," Lisa said.
All the menus for the rest of the week (or the rest of tour, sounds like) include "oranges until they are gone." Thanks for the great donation!
The Colts are at another great school, although it was a bit of a hike from where the buses parked to the cooks' room. They only took necessities, they said. (I was almost afraid to ask what constituted 'necessities' at this point in tour.)
The cooktruck is on a hill which gives the cooks a bird's-eye view of rehearsals. Nice.

Happy Birthday, Austin B and Rustin B
The weather today is a big humid, but Lisa says: "It's absolutely perfect, considering it's Washington D.C.!"
Cooks have private showers. :)
And Gallaudet University is being a wonderful host -- just like it was for the inaugural parade back in January. I bet it's warmer today than it was on inauguration day....

Corps arrived at 4:30 AM. Dale reports that it is a fantastic day – not a cloud in the sky. A great day to be on the cook truck, for sure!
It seems that a parent of a Glassmen member lived near where the Colts were housed yesterday. She happened to be talking to her son, and remarked that the Colts were staying in town. He asked her to bring a treat over the Colts. She brought popsicles over for the corps yesterday.
A cold treat for sure, but it warms my heart. Thank you to both the Glassmen parent and member for their thoughtfulness!

Happy Birthday, Kristin O!
Kids were really pumped after last night's show.
Food drop today! Food distributor called Lori at 4:30 AM and wanted to know where we were so they could do the drop. If you've ever toured, you know that at 4:30 AM the only people that know where we are is Mike and the lead driver. Food drop now scheduled between 8 and 10.
The band director at Oelwein, IA (cornfield tour stop #2) was a surprise attendee at the show last night. He is vacationing with his family in the Van Buren, AR area. While he was making a grocery stop, the clerks saw his "band" shirt and asked him if was in town for the drum corps show - which was a total surprise to him. He wondered if the Colts were there. They told him "yes", and that finalized the family plans for the evening. The cooks got to thank him personally for allowing us to use the facilities at his school.

When Dale called it was overcast with a light rain. He said it felt really good and was providing some cooling.
Everybody had a great, relaxing and fun time during yesterday's free day on the Riverwalk, at the mall, movies and/or restaurants. The kids have been working very hard and can start their last 2 weeks recharged. Yes, it is only 2 weeks from tomorrow they arrive in Indy.
I realized how much I missed tour when I heard the generator as Dale passed by it while describing the scene of Ray McG laying on the ground under the gator trailer - repairing the taillights once again. Wait ... is that diesel I smell?
Happy Birthday, Matt H!

Lori says, "Look out, San Antonio, the cooks are on the loose!"
The cooks say the kids were really looking forward to a free day after a string of big performances. "And so are the cooks."
If anybody is in the Dallas area tomorrow, I'm sure that the cooktruck could use donations of Gatorade, fresh fruit and fresh vegetables for the long, hot run across the South this week. Happy Birthday, Kayla K!
Thanks to everyone who brought donations this week too. Just know that everything you bring helps the Colts and the cooks appreciate every single donation, even if we can't acknowledge each one.

A HUGE thank you to Cindy S and her family for putting together the HUGE Texas-style dinner for the corps last night in Dallas. The cooks said it was "absolutely wonderful." Thank you, thank you, thank you.
It's still hot. "You don't want to do anything but get off your feet and out of the heat," Jody G says.
So DCI's show in Dallas and show in Houston on the same night and then all the corps swap cities and do it again the next night might have to be re-thought. Every time the Colts tried to stop on the way from Dallas to Houston (i.e. rest stops, for fuel, etc.), there were lots of other corps there to greet them or join them. Lots. The cooks said the first rest stop they tried to stop at was full of corps buses and it took them a long time just to drive through. Then they were competing with corps coming from Houston for rest rooms at truck stops. "There were people everywhere." Sounds like fun.

Jody G called this afternoon to say she looked out the window and the bus drivers Mike and Mike were mopping the floor of the kitchen trailer. Thanks guys!
And they got donations of oranges and the Claremore color guard brought over water and treats.
Food drop postponed until Thursday morning!
Thanks for the brownies donated for Meal 4 yesterday!
Jody G says last night's show was fantastic. "Oh my gosh. They were so pumped, they had me pumped." Organizers postponed the show for 20 minutes to try to get more shade on the hot, hot field, so the Colts went on under the lights.
No air conditioning in the gym and no a/c for the cooks either last night. Hot! "No air conditioning last night in the school, and it was 105 in the shade yesterday. But wee made it," Jody G says. A bunch of the corps members moved outside last night because the gym was not air conditioned.

If today's menus look a lot like yesterday's, well, I got on the wrong line on Jody G's spreadsheet of meals. She's not feeding the corps the same thing every day. I'll fix yesterdays when I get through with today's.
Thanks for all the great donations. Keep them coming! Yesterday we got Gatorade, cantaloupe, sweet corn, cookies, cinnamon rolls. More please.
The Colts got out of the lot on time last night and pulled in at a beautiful school in Broken Arrow, OK, about 5:15 today.
Jody G says, "It was hotter than a pistol yesterday, but the showers made up for the heat. Kind of." Amazing what a good shower will do for cooks.

Bring powdered Gatorade. The cooks are giving the corps Gatorade directly out of the big, free-standing coolers to make sure they are getting it. So they can use lots.
They got a load of shucked corn, which was in the oven roasting when Jody G called in.
There was a huge lightning storm and rain on the way down, but it had stopped by the time they got to the housing -- then started again after stuff was moved in. Whew.
Lorrie McG is bringing peaches, pears, and nectarines from Arkansas when she arrives tomorrow. Yay for fresh fruit!

Thanks to Cindy S, who we left off the helper list yesterday, for coming in an helping so much on the Nebraska-Denver run. That really gave the crew a boost.
Jody G says seeing the Colts at Mile High Stadium (I know it's called something corporate at Mile High, but frankly, I don't care) was something special. "The show was so cool. The cooks sat way at the top so we could see all the formations. They looked really great."
Doing inventory today for food drop on Wednesday. Some work getting done on the kitchen trailer and things getting squared away kind of day.

Today was partly cloudy with a little bit of humidity, but Lisa said, "When you're looking at the Rocky Mountains, it absolutely doesn't matter."
The cooks got three hours of sleeping time after the corps got to the school this morning. The school is great. The showers got a "10" from the cooks.
"We're just having a good old time," Lisa says.

Happy Birthday, Chris F!
Thanks to Jody S. for jumping in and filling the head cook spot for three days in Pella (including the unexpected Monday). Great cook and great crew. Thanks everyone who showed up to help and all who brought fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, cookies, the fixings for pasta salad, etc.
The day dawned sort of misty, but Lisa said, "It's going to be a great day no matter what!"
Big dog and pony show planned for Gothenburg tonight!

Lots of changes in the show – it’s going great! Mike wrote on the board: “Thank you to our uniform washers, and to all our volunteers!” Some rain delays yesterday. Brock treated the corps to a nice sketch of a dutch windmill, while staying dry in the cook truck.
Carla’s note to the guard on the board: “We will be at the stadium – wear red and black. Clean-up, pull your hair back, so you don’t scare the children!”

Food drop today! Arrived at 6 with Loras and Brock doing a lot of the heavy lifting. David can actually walk into the freezer; can't close the door when he is in there, but that is still a significant feat.
Nice day until just before meal 3. Rain resulted in the meal being served in the hallway. Also, the rain caused Mary to delay her first member sale from the new souvie trailer to tomorrow.
Thanks for all of the donations of fresh fruit, fresh veggies and pasta. We are still very short on powdered gatorade. We are entering the part of tour where the kids really need to stay hydrated. If you are planning to visit, please bring some so we can add the gatorade powder to the existing drinks.

Many thanks for Barry filling in as head cook for the day in Michigan City. And he brought blintzes!
Soggy, soggy parades in Chicago. The Northbrook parade was soggy, but the rain let up before pizza in the parking lot, so that wasn't too bad. The Colts looked great nonetheless. Way to come through Red Team. Heard lots of people cheering for them and saying "Thanks for coming!"
Decent, if cool, evening before departure.
Cooks need: fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, napkins

Today's News
It was cool and cloudy this morning for the corps. The caravan was a bit late getting in last night but the day got off to an early start anyway.
Thanks to everyone who brought donations at homeshow last night. Too many to mention, but the cooks were especially thankful for the fresh fruit and veggies, cookies, and Gatorade. Keep those donations coming! We'll still be in the Midwest for a few more days!

It was sunny this morning in Madison, with big, puffy clouds. All in all, a pretty nice day. Welcome to drum corps.

If you're coming to homeshow, the cooks would like fresh vegetables -- broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, etc. -- please. Fresh fruit is always welcome, too. Thanks for all the great donations that have been coming in.

Today's News
Thanks to Jody G and all her crew for a great week!
It's a gorgeous day today in Madison. "Just perfect," Rod says. They are in a beautiful, shady spot with the cooktruck. They can hear the brass and percussion, but can't quite see them. Rod says, "Close enough to hear Dr. Beat, anyway."
Note on the board: If you need shako repairs, see Lisa.
Last night's concert with the Dubuque Symphony was great. The cooks thought they were going to have to go to Plan B when it started pouring rain before dinner but it stopped as quickly as it started and they served out of the truck as planned.
The Colts played their inaugural parade tune "76 Trombones" and got a standing ovation at the concert. Then they joined the symphony on Mars and Jupiter, the 1812 Overture, and Stars & Stripes Forever.

Happy Birthday, Don L and Amber N!
Food drop today. Rod says he was in the freezer loading and arranging from 6:30-10:30 this morning. "I've never seen so much food in my whole life," he says. "You can take one step inside the freezer, then boxes everywhere." As the cooks say, they store all their men in the cooler. (Hope I didn't give away any secrets.
Left Normal about midnight and arrived about 5 a.m. The corps got some floor time but many of the cooks stayed up getting ready for the food drop. I'll bet there are some naps during the symphony concert this evening.
As you may have heard, the Glassmen drum and bugle corps had an accident with their volunteer bus. Last night in Normal, after they performed, the Colts stayed in uniform and arced up near the Glassmen's trailers. When the Glassmen came off the field after they performed, the Colts played their corps song "Morning" for the other corps in a show of support. A very cool, very "Colts" thing to do. "It was a nice way to honor them and support them," Rod says.
The Colts show in Normal was a good one, with a great crowd response. The Colts, always crowd pleasers.

Today's News
Don't forget that the cooks are asking for donations of fresh fruit.
The call this morning was a bit incomplete, since the cooks had 40 minutes to hit the ground and serve breakfast this morning. Weather pushed back the show time last night by about an hour and a half, which pushed back departure, which pushed back arrival, etc.
The cooks were bracing for "another hot as a pistol" day today in the Midwest. The kids are at the high school. The cooktruck is at the nearby recreational park. "I wish I could go to the waterslide," the head cook says.
Last night's Meal 4 was disrupted by the storms too. Three corps -- the Cadets, the Cavaliers, and the Colts -- came together for a joint "snack" after the Toledo show. The Cadets had been in Michigan and had lost all their Meal 4 prep to storms except brownies and ice cream, so that's what they brought to the party. Along with a kick-ass sound system that got everybody moving at snack.
The Cavies served 2 corndogs to each member of all three corps and the Colts kicked in chicken nuggets and chili (it had turned off cool after the storms.)
