Today's News
Karen R. called in the report today and said it was a beautiful, sunny day. They were hoping for a high temperature of about 75 this afternoon.

Thanks go out to everyone who brought donations to Oswego yesterday. There were tons and tons of fruit brought in for the corps and other goodies too. Keep them coming!

Karen said a bird had just flown in the cooktruck and everyone was trying to get it out. “We’re just having fun,” she said.

Thanks to Roger D. for driving this week.

Today's News
It’s bright and sunny with a little breeze this morning outside the cooktruck. And fairly cool, which is good on the cooks and the corps.

The corps got in at 7:30 a.m., which is WAY ahead of schedule. Which is good on the corps and the cooks.

Almost all the new players are now in the whole show. The cooks stood at the base of the stands during the show last night, which gave them a ground-level view of the show. (As I remember, if you don’t have an actual ticket in Hornell, they don’t let you up in the stands. At least that’s happened to me in the past.) The crowd was very responsive to the Colts last night. The standing ovation for them lasted all the way through the next corps coming on the field.

The cooks are preparing dishes such as “Bartok salad” and “Troika toast” in honor of the show.

They could use some donations of fruit and Gatorade powder. And they’re in Indiana today and Illinois tomorrow, so they are in donation distance again. We appreciate all the donations that have been coming in. Too many to acknowledge individually, but be sure every one is appreciated. Lots of fruit being donated, but the Colts are eating it as quickly as it comes in.

Roger D. is the volunteer driver this week.

Today's News
Happy birthday, A.J. P!

The corps got in to New York about 2:30 a.m., so there was some sleep time, after an awesome show in Erie.

Eleven pre-schoolers had a field trip on the kitchen truck this morning to see everything and then were going out to watch the Colts rehearse.

It’s the second beautiful, sunny day in a row. And the school they are staying at is nestled between two mountains.

Roger D. is the volunteer driver this week.

We get letters from boyfriends too

Dear David and cooktruck,
A girlfriend sent you guys an e-mail, so it's a boyfriend's turn. I'm Carrie Jo's (trumpet) boyfriend. I miss Carrie Jo and the pictures help, because I occasionally get to see her. Also I get to read about all the hard work Carrie Jo and the other Colts members are doing. It makes me very proud of her. The schedule helps me to know when and when not to call her, so thanks a lot. I just wanted e-mail and say thanks for all the info you're posting on the site. I'm looking forward to seeing you guys perform at Siloam Springs, AR.
Thanks A lot,
Chris Enslow

Today's News

Roger D. is the volunteer driver this week.

The corps got in about 6:30 a.m. today, a bit ahead of schedule.

There has been a “massive amount of fruit” donated in the past few days. But the cooks say that doesn’t mean they couldn’t use more! The corps members are eating as much fruit as the cooks can put in front of them. They got more grapes and cookies today. “We’re in Pennsylvania and we’re still getting donations,” Lori says.

She also says it’s time to start thinking about bringing donations of powdered Gatorade to mix in with the regular drink mix. Temperatures are soaring.

Even girlfriends read the cooktruck....

Dear David and everyone working on the cooktruck,

Well, everyone else has been sending you thank-yous and things, and I
figured, I should too! I read the Colts Cooktruck website everyday as
well, and it helps me feel connected. I am the girlfriend of Brian
Levine, (trumpet player) and I love to know the latest news and
everything. Plus, it's fun to call Brian around meal 4 and say "how
are your nachos" or whatever he's eating, just to freak him out.
Thanks for all your work on posting things everyday, and thanks to
everyone who is helping and putting their time in. Even girlfriends
appreciate it!
lots of love,
Jenna Heerdt

Today's News

Roger D. is the volunteer driver this week.

Colts had an "awesome" show last night, receiving the biggest standing ovation of all the corps. They travelled well and arrived in Belding one hour early, in spite of construction and stand-still traffic in Chicago. There was also a 2:30 am stop at a Gary truck stop which had "lots of traffic" and must have been interesting, although no other details were shared.

The early arrival meant that the members got an extra hour of sleep and the cooks even got to lay down for a while.

The corps has received lots of donations including fruit, homemade banana bread, rolls, buns, and too many things to keep track of! Thanks to all who have donated. The contributions are wonderful, and the kitchen staff says "keep it coming."

Roger D. is the volunteer driver this week.

The corps had a great show last night, although it was a stand-still only due to rain. The crowd was excited about the show, and the corps played Freebird for all of the Colts parents in attendance. The corps arrived in Rockford one hour early this morning.

Today they are right next to the Rock River. It's cool and cloudy, and they fear there could be more rain tonight. Practice is going well and they're doing a great job. Lauren R. and her crew are there working on uniform repairs, guard outfits, and capes.

Letter From England

From the mom of "cool kid" Dan the Brit

Hi, Just a quick email from a UK Colts Mum to say how much I enjoy the
Cooktruck and check it every day to see how Dan is doing and search for
him in the photos. Looks like you are feeding them toooooo well this year
as he looks like he's putting on weight and he usually comes home from
tour a few sizes smaller ;0)
We have to wait until August to travel to the U.S. for finals week, which
seems so far away, so thanks for keeping us in touch with how things are
going until then.
Best wishes to all the Colts - Julie GP

Today's News
Jody S. leaves as head cook today. Thanks for a great week!

Lots of former Colts and former Colts volunteers stopped by Saydel to say hi and help out. The Colt Cadet parents helped serve a big snack last night.

The Colts did a great runthrough last night at the end of ensemble and then went up in the stands to give the Colt Cadets a prolonged welcome ovation and a standing “O” at the end of the Cadets’ runthrough. The Colt Cadets have a lot of talented members and a great sound this year. Thanks to all the Cadet volunteers who came over to help with the cooktruck when we were serving the combined corps.

Keep emailing me. I love to hear your thoughts about how things are going and the fan mail is fantastic! I’m glad the changes we made have made the blog load faster for some people. Refine, refine, refine.

Notes found on the side of the cooktruck:
Colts—
We miss you guys and can’t wait to see you 2 night & 2 morrow. Bryon K.
Joe F.,
We can’t wait to hear you. Jerry & Amy

Food drop today at 6:30 a.m. with breakfast at 9. It was all hands on deck for a while, but the crew had everything packed in the freezer and ready to go onto the equipment truck by 9 a.m.

OK, so maybe it’s just a homing instinct. Or good karma. I (David) drove to Omaha last night to see the performance. As I’m pulling off I-80, I’m thinking, “I hope this is the right exit.” I roll up to the intersection – right behind the kitchen truck and the equipment truck. I just fell in line and followed Bob and Frank to the show site. Parked in the lot right next to them.

The letters come from all over

David and all the people on the cooktruck: I just read the letter from Beth's mom and I too have been following the daily blog as my baby sister Lisa has been cooking for the kids and my neice Jackie is a member of the Colts. I have been following what they are doing on a daily basis and I feel like part of the group. I can't wait until July 28th so I can see the show. Please keep the updates and info going as lots of us are enjoying what you print.
Thanks!

We get letters

Got a nice email a day or so ago and I thought I'd share:

I would like to thank the authors of the cooktruck blog for their daily entries. I am the mother of one of Colts members (from Ohio) and I read it every day. It makes me feel connected. The pictures are great! I look forward to trying to pick my member out of the crowd. I can't wait until July 7th when you are in Canton so I can finally get to see the show. I have read such great reviews about it. Have fun on the rest of your tour and I look forward to reading more.
Steven's Mom,
Beth MacAlpine

Thanks to Steven's mom for writing to the Virtual Cooktruck. I would just like to add my thanks to everyone on tour and at home who help me do this. I appreciate all the "staff" who contribute and cover for me when I'm busy -- Olaf, Bill, Jim J, Rod R -- and everyone who sends in pictures. But most of all I want to thank the head cooks and other cooks who take time out from their very, very busy days on the road to call in a report. I can do a lot of stuff in advance like the maps and the photos, but without those "real" updates, this thing would be nothing.

Thanks.

Happy Birthday, Carol L!

Got in to Sioux Falls about 6 a.m. – early! So early that the cooks got some unscheduled downtime too.

It rained in Sioux Falls, but after the corps got in and settled and before the cooks had to go back out and open up the cooktruck for today. Good timing. (today turned out to be really windy. Really windy)

I’m putting out the “Stop Cookies” sign for right now. We got a great outpouring in Minnesota and Wisconsin, so the corps is good on cookies, for now. Of course, if you’ve already got them bought or baked, bring ‘em.

The corps could use more donations of fruit, though. We got grapes, watermelon, and other fruit over the weekend, but most of that will be gone today. They like fruit.

I was in Menomonie for the show last night. Wow. Wow. Wow. The sound. The colors. The movement. The sound. I kept hearing people in the crowd behind me go, “Look at that. Look at that.” To cap it, the corps got a standing ovation from the very drum corps-savvy Menomonie crowd. And what’s really exciting is we know they are just going to keep getting better. – David S.

The corps caravan got in about 2:15-2:30 a.m. after running through a series of thunderstorms. The area around Minneapolis got two-and-a-half inches of rain last night but the corps members stayed dry for the most part.

There was a big crowd in Cresco for the performance last night, including Mr. and Mrs. Orwoll – Greg’s parents. They brought a donation of treats for the corps.

Lauren and Sue are still on doing uniforms.

Today's News
The guard uniforms are in and are beautiful. The uniform crew -- Lauren and Sue -- are in doing fittings and re-fittings this week.

There was a good crowd for the summer premiere in Platteville last night. And thanks to the Colt Cadet parents who helped out feeding the corps.

The cooks are putting out a call for more fruit donations for the corps. The members love the fruit and eat it as often as they can. Also, some different kinds of cereal donations (no Cherrios, please) would be greatly appreciated.

Although I'm a bit afraid to say it, they could use a few cookies -- not dozens and dozens -- to supplement some of the desserts. The cooks said it was a "light call" for cookies. Give accordingly.

Olaf making his way -- slowly -- to tour

I am sitting at the airport (Brussels) waisting my time surfing around
while waiting for my delayed flight (2,5 h), will miss my connecting flight
to Minneapolis so all in all I will arrive 5,5 hours later than planned.
Not something I am looking forward to after having slept only 2,5 hours
after my trip from Moscow yesterday, repacking, etc.
But the main purpose to go there keeps me on my feet. Long day but at the
end something to look forward to.
Can't wait to see everyone, New Uniforms, will they be officialy presented?
Hope to talk to you soon in real

Olaf very tired "Alf "

Jim J. sent in this item after his recent tour on the cooktruck:

Pete Jordan wrote a book entitled Dishwasher: One Man's Quest to Wash Dishes in All 50 States.

Sounds all too familiar to me!!

Today's News
It's a food drop day. Bill's been hard at work clearing space in the freezer for the influx of food.

There was a full house last night in Belmont for the Brass 'n' Brats show. They estimated 3,000 people turned out for the Colts, Colt Cadets, and Capital Sound.

Cap Sound was totally impressed with the food provided for them by the Colts Cooktruck. Bill says the dinner for 400 went well. They went through 20 cans of ravioli and 14 cans of corn. Feeding all three corps.

Thanks for all the donations. Sorry we can't acknowledge all of them by name, but it's hard enough for the cooks to keep up with what day it is. We appreciate them all, even if we don't get to list them here. And keep them coming.

Today's News
Today's birthdays: Jessica M., Keenan C., and Tim B.

Word is that the corps in staying in Lancaster tonight, instead of packing up and heading over to Belmont. They'll prepare in Lancaster on Tuesday, bus over to Belmont for the show, and then return to Lancaster after the Brass and Brats performance. The Colt Cadets will be there and will be eating dinner with the Colts, as will Cap Sound.

The corps did a full run through of the show last night. "It was pretty cool. Really great," Bill says.

The weather in Lancaster has been just beautiful. There was even a light breeze today to cool things off. Thanks, Bev. I'm sure you arranged the beautiful weather too.

A donation of grapes came all the way from Pennsylvania. Fruit is a good donation, as are the other things listed in the tour guide.

As always, check colts.org for the latest official word on tour news, housing sites, mail drops, or other corps information.

Ummm, sorry.

The cooktruck was down for a while this morning. Don't really know why that happened, but it should be back up and running now. (Thanks, Rod, for letting me know right away.)

Please tell me if there are more problems. But since you're reading this, it must be working, so you wouldn't know if there were more problems or not. Hmmmmm.

Today's News
Last night's dog-and-pony in Center Point was well attended and well received, Barry said. "It was a good crowd. And very receptive." He said a lot of people showed up even though there hadn't been much advance publicity for the show.

If you heard about yesterday's weather events near the corps, the storms that were in the area actually skirted around them. There was a tornado warning so everyone went into shelter areas in the school but the line of storms passed by. "We sat in the halls and the bathrooms for a little while but that was over quickly," Barry said.

Happy Birthday, Marty R., bass drum

It was 83 degrees at noon -- the warmest it's been for a while for the Colts. It was partly sunny and very windy. The wind was supposed to get worse later in the day, with severe winds possible.

Everyone's out rehearsing. Things seem to be going well.

The performance in Delhi went over great with a decent size and appreciative crowd. The Colt Cadets got a standing ovation from the Colts. Nice touch.

The Colts are working on the closer today, trying to finish it up so the show is complete and refinements can continue.

Colts Itinerary part 1

Colts Itinerary part 1 has been posted at www.colts.org.

I'd post it here for your (and my) convenience, but for sure then something would change and someone would have the wrong information. So go look at it on colts.org.

Schedules, housing sites, and even shows are subject to last minute changes as the season goes along. As much as we try, the info here is not 100 percent up to date, and it especially won't be as soon as Jody and I start to go out on tour.

So check colts.org for the official word on things. Thanks.

Today's News
Happy birthday Kelly D., guard member.

Food drop! The freezer is packed and the dry goods and paper goods are being stowed away. Jim said there was lots of stuff in the food drop that Barry was planning to use in the next day or two so there'd be room again in the freezer.

It is a nice day in Delhi, albeit a bit on the breezy side. Jim said the morning was cool and he thought he and Barry had brought the San Francisco weather with them, but then it turned back into the Midwest and was sunny and much warmer.

Work crews are all assigned, so the corps members have thier jobs for the summer.

There was a note on the side of the cooktruck that LeAnn wanted people to call her. She's having a major bout of drum corps withdrawal.

Today's News
Luba leaves today. Thanks to a great opening week head cook!

Bill called in the report this morning. (I missed talking to him 'cause my cel phone was on buzzzzzzzzzz not ring. Oh well.)

He said the move from Platteville to Delhi went well. The corps got in about 12:05 a.m. Good time from Wisconsin.

They're in good shape in Delhi. There was a little rain before dawn this morning but Bill said it looks to be a decent day today. Forecast is for the possibility of showers.

As always, check colts.org for the latest official word on tour news, housing sites, mail drops, or other corps information.

Today's News
The cooks had a kind of mini-mustgo for the kids last night, but more controlled on portions. "The kids were really, really excited," Luba said. First mustgo of the season -- who wouldn't be excited?

The morning was gorgeous in Platteville, and it seems the corps has missed most of the rain that's been sweeping across some of the Midwest. There was a bit of rain and a couple of claps of thunder yesterday, but the Colts "really didn't get rained on," Luba said.
